Hansi Flick rejects Szczesny’s first request at Barcelona
Barcelona announced the signing of Wojciech Szczesny officially on a contract that extends until the end of the current season to compensate for the long absence of Marc ter Stegen, who suffered a serious injury that will keep him off the field for a whole year.
Szczesny accepted Barcelona’s offer after announcing his retirement despite having a valid contract with Juventus and rejecting tempting offers from the Saudi league. But he decided to respond to Barcelona’s call.
La Liga allowed Barcelona to sign a new goalkeeper exceptionally on the condition that he is a free agent, conditions that were met by the veteran Polish goalkeeper.
Catalan newspaper Sport claimed that Barcelona coach Hansi Flick rejected the request made by Szczesny through his compatriot Robert Lewandowski.
According to Cadena Ser, Szczesny agreed to come out of retirement and accepted Barcelona’s offer on one condition only: that he be guaranteed a starting spot in the matches, a request that Hansi Flick publicly rejected.
“The only thing I can say is that Barcelona players cannot have a guarantee that they will be a starter in the lineup,” Flick said on Monday.
